Thunderbird Setup Instructions

  1. Download and install Thunderbird.
  2. When you open Thunderbird, it will ask you to set up your email. ​ Enter your Name, YoungLife GSuite email, and YoungLife password. ​ Click Continue.
  3. Thunderbird will search for the corect server settings, and then display them. ​ This can take a few minutes, but usually is done within 1 minute. ​ Once it has displayed them, click Done.
  4. An SSO window will open. ​ Enter your Staff Resources username and password. ​ Click "Sign in".
  5. Select your YoungLife GSuite email.
  6. Click "Allow".
  7. If the "System Integration" window appears, and you want Thunderbird to be your default email app, click "Set as Default". ​ Otherwise, uncheck "Always perform this check when starting Thunderbird", and click "Skip Integration".
  8. To get the Spam button to work correctly, click the humburger menu in the upper-right (see key), mouse-over Options, and click "Account Settings".
  9. Go to "Junk Settings", uncheck "Enable adaptive junk...", and check "Move new junk messages to:". ​ Click OK.
  10. To adjust how messages are marked as read, click the hamburger menu again, and click Options. ​ Go to Display/Advanced. ​ Set the Reading options to your preference. ​ Click OK.
  11. To sync Contacts, click the hamburger menu and click "Add-ons". ​ Select "Extensions" on the left, and locate the search bar in the upper-right. ​ Search for "gContactSync". ​ To the right of gContactSync, click "Add to Thunderbird". ​ On the next window, click "Install Now". ​ In the upper-right, click the "Restart Now" button, to restart Thunderbird.
  12. After Thunderbird restarts, gContactSync Wizard will appear. ​ Make sure your YoungLife GSuite email is selected, and click Next. ​ Sign into the SSO page with your Staff Resources credentials. ​ Select your YoungLife GSuite email and click Allow. ​ The default settings on the next screen are probably fine, but if you want to change something, you can. ​ Click Finish. ​ After a moment, a window will appear with a summary of the Contacts synced. ​ You can close the Add-ons tab and "Add-ons Manager" tab. ​ If you select "Address Book" (see key), you will see your contacts.
    Note: Thunderbird can only see your own contacts. ​ It does not see the entire YoungLife contact list.
  13. To sync your Calendar, open the calendar with the calendar icon in the upper-right, to the left of the minimize button (see key). ​ Right-click the white-space beneath the "Home" calendar (you can delete this calendar after adding your GSuite one, if desired), and click "New Calendar". ​ Select "On the Network", and click Next. ​ Select CalDAV, and for the location, enter "https://apidata.googleusercontent.com/caldav/v2/calid/events" (without quotes, and entering your YoungLife GSuite email address in place of "calid". ​ Click Next. ​ Enter a name for your calendar, and the color you want. ​ Click Continue.
  14. On the sign in page, enter your YoungLife GSuite email addres, and click Next. ​ Enter your Staff Resources credentials on the SSO page, and click "Sign in". ​ Click Allow. ​ Click Finish.
  15. To add secondary calendars: If you have additional calendars you want added to Thunderbird, you first need to find the calid​ for those calendars. ​ To do so, go to your GSuite calendars in your web browser (calendar.google.com), and go to Settings. ​ Select the calendar you want to add, and click "Integrate calendar". ​ The top field in the "Integrate calendar" section is "Calendar ID". ​ That is your calid. ​ Repeat steps 13 and 14, using this calid.
